Is Diabetes a Contagious Disease? If Not, What Are Your Chances of Acquiring This Disease Today? By Fonda Fletcher

Almost two years ago the CDC, Center for Disease Control reported over 24 million people in America were diabetic. Over 25 percent were undiagnosed or not yet aware they had diabetes. 54 million people in America were over 21 years or older, 12 million were overweight between the ages of 45-74. The CDC also reported since the year 2000 1 of every 3 persons born will become diabetic in their lifetime. What future does this hold for your children and grandchildren. If you take care of your health, exercise and eat right then you will have a stronger chance at staying healthy.

If you are among the majority of 54 million prediabetics, that greatly increases the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and eye disorder. They are 5 to 15 times more likely to become a Type 2 Diabetic than someone with normal blood sugar results. A prediabetic is someone who has elevated blood sugars above normal yet not high enough to be deemed diabetic. There are also other factors that put you at greater risk of acquiring this disease. High blood pressure, history of vascular disease, if your BMI, or body mass index is 25 or above, you get little or no exercise. You need to check with your physician to be certain.

Recommended screening for Diabetes is very simple. Your doctor will take your height, weight, blood pressure, check your blood work for your average sugar levels. A GTT, or Glucose Tolerance Test is performed where you fast no food or drink for 12 hours. They draw your blood then give you a bottle of glucose, which is sickening sweet. They test your blood again generally 2 hours after glucose is given. He will also check your cholesterol levels, along with your triglycerides or the chemical formation of fats in your body. After your test results come back from the lab your doctor will explain the test result to you.

If you are prediabetic learn all you can on proper nutrition, proper diet, blood sugar control, and exercise. This can greatly benefit you and your condition, which can also make you feel better about yourself. Having diabetes can be overwhelming, especially with all the responsibilities you have. Talk to your doctor. When you want to speak to other diabetics you can go to tudiabetes.com

Here is a Simple Plan to Stop Diabetes - Can You Do It? By Lucy Peacock

So you have been given the diagnosis - type 2 diabetes. That is what you have. You have to face it, live with it and get on with your life. It is time to make some decisions about your future. Do you want to control the diabetes or let it control you

I bet you have heard it all before. The way to control diabetes is through diet and exercise. Change your lifestyle. Years of doing things one way must be replaced with doing it a different way. Instead of eating all those carbohydrates you love, you have to learn to love other kinds of foods. Instead of laying back in that recliner you have to get up and start doing that exercise program you are always planning to start.

You should have made these changes years ago but you were too complacent, too happy with the way things were. Who noticed those extra pounds you packed on over the years? Those family gatherings would not have been the same without your pecan pies and chicken and dumplings, would they?

Well, life is about changes! You have to learn to roll with the flow. You must meet the challenges life sends your way, head on, isn't that what they say? So you have diabetes, so what? You can learn to deal with this. It just another bump in the road. The road would be boring to travel if it were too smooth. You would become too complacent.

You must simply decide if you want to live with type 2 diabetes 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year or if you want to try and reverse it. You can reverse it you know! Lots of others have done it. Change your diet plan and start your exercise plan. Very simple things you can do!

Changing your lifestyle now after all these years will not be easy! You have an easy plan to follow: change your diet and start exercising. It is only 2 things you have to remember to do. 2 simple things you must do, but it is an entire lifetime of changing the rules, old habits, ingrained ideas about the good life, traditions, and a whole way of life!

It is up to you. You can do it one day at a time. It is just like the rules at AA! Take one day at a time!

First you start by changing the diet. You are what you eat. You love sweets, carbohydrates and junk food. A simple way to start would be to get off the sweets. Stop eating foods crammed full of sugar and stop drinking the sugar! Take a week, 7 days, and stop eating and using sugar. White refined sugar and all of the products you make with it are taboo. Get off the sugar and you will never miss it. This includes diet foods filled with artificial sweeteners as well. They are full of carbohydrates which brings me to the next thing you need to do.

Stop eating carbohydrates in massive amounts. There are 2 kinds of Carbohydrates: simple and complex. Simple ones are the sugary kind, easy to digest and that load your body up with sugar. Complex ones are the kind you want to eat. You want to spread them out over the entire day. It takes the body longer to digest complex ones and all the sugar does not enter your body at once. You can find complete lists of both kinds of carbohydrates online.

Once you start doing this you will see start seeing lower blood sugar levels, weight loss, improvement in insulin resistance, and lower blood pressure. All of these factors contribute to high blood sugar levels. Just a simple change in the way you eat and the kind of carbohydrates you eat can greatly improve all of these.

Then, start your exercise plan. Exercise, done on a regular basis, reduces the amount of body fat, increases your metabolic rate, reduces blood pressure and bad cholesterol (LDL), increases good cholesterol (HDL), and reduces blood sugar levels. All the things you need to change begin changing with a regular exercise plan!

Now you are taking the right steps to change your lifestyle! Just keep up the good work and you can live a long healthy great quality of life. It is up to you. You are now on the right road. No one said it would be easy to stay on the right road. There will be pitfalls along the way. You will slide and find yourself eating the things you should not eat and not doing the exercise. When you fall off the path, just get back up and start again.

It is a simple plan. 2 things to do. Change your diet and start exercising!

Take care until next time.

Influenza, Cold Flu Prevention Treatment

Exposing ourselves to various bacteria, fungi and viruses is inevitable. Exposure can come while at school, in the workplace, on public transit, or even simply around friends and family. While sickness may be inevitable and a part of life, our bodies are meant to adjust to and compensate for these bacteria, fungi and viruses. The same factors apply to the Cold Flu. So let us explore some proper cold flu prevention treatment principles.

The first thing to note is that the cold flu is a virus and is passed when a someone comes in contact with another person. For most people human contact is inevitable, outside of a person being a hermit. So when the cold flu virus is active, the best antidote is a strong cold flu prevention treatment plan. Here is some good advice to make a part of your cold flu prevention treatment action plan.

Hand Washing

This is where every prevention plan should begin. Washing your hands is perhaps the best starting point in cold flu prevention. Touch can be the greatest transmitter of any flu virus. You equally want to stay away from people who are coughing or sneezing. When the virus becomes airborne is such ways, it can quickly be transmitted to those in close proximity.

Flu Shots

Flu shots can give an added boost to your immune system and should be considered once each year. While shots are never a 100% guaranty against the flu, they can minimize the risk as well as the effects of contracting the flu. These shots can be particularly helpful for the very young as well as the elderly in our society.

Plenty of Rest

Make sure that you get an adequate amount of sleep and rest. Not enough sleep and rest can add stress on your immune system causing greater susceptibility to the flu bug. So a great prevention rule is that you should make sure that you regularly get enough sleep.

Avoid Drastic Temperature Change

Sudden changes of external temperature should be avoided. When you are leaving your warm home to go into the frigid climate outside, make sure that you have adequate and suitable layers of clothing for the conditions. Getting chilled can be a quick way to make your body susceptible to the flu bug.

Stop Smoking

This prevention treatment applies to far less people in North America today than it did 25 years ago. As fewer and fewer people are smoking this becomes less of an issue. However, for the people who do smoke, it can dramatically add to their susceptibility to contract that flu virus. Flu symptoms are far worse for those who smoke when compared to those who don't. So the best advice is to simple quit smoking. This in itself will dramatically improve your health.

Natural Migraine Relief Via Diaphragmatic Breathing By Diana Bertoldo

One of the most valuable and natural migraine relief skills that every migraine sufferer should master is diaphragmatic breathing. Diaphragmatic breathing involves breathing deep into the belly rather than breathing shallowly into the chest. Learning to breathe deeply into your belly and engaging your diaphragm muscle more fully will support you in dilating your arteries. Learning to maintain this dilation will help you greatly in achieving natural migraine relief.
With practice, diaphragmatic breathing will become your new normal way of breathing. You will not need to think about it so much because it will become natural and automatic for you.
Diaphragmatic breathing will also ease much of the muscle tension that we create when we practice shallow and thoracic breathing. In thoracic breathing, (which unfortunately is the norm for many of us) we activate our neck, shoulder and back muscles far more than necessary. Thoracic breathing will not support you in keeping your arteries dilated. We create tension this way and this same tension can sabotage your quest to be migraine free. Your neck, back and shoulder muscles are used very little when practicing diaphragmatic breathing.
Diaphragmatic breathing is one of the easiest skills you can master for natural migraine relief. You will likely feel the affects quickly experiencing a warming in the hands and feet, muscle relaxation, and a sense of greater calm.
In the beginning, when you practice diaphragmatic breathing you might notice that your diaphragm feels tight, weak or even tires easily. Remember, if you have been a thoracic breather for a long time your diaphragm will need a little time to adjust to this new way of breathing. That's perfectly normal. Just beginning with 5-10 minutes of diaphragmatic breathing a day is a wonderful way for you to develop this natural migraine relief breathing habit. Give your body time to adjust and practice increasing the amount of time you spend developing this much healthier way of breathing.
Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercise for Natural Migraine Relief:
To begin, lie down on your back as this is the easiest way to practice getting the hang of it. Place one hand gently on your chest and the other hand on your belly. Breathe in slowly to the count of five through your nose, and then exhale slowly to the count of five through your nose. Pay attention to your belly as it rises with each inhalation. Focus on the expansion of your belly. Use your diaphragm muscle to support your belly in expanding.
Also pay attention to the hand you have placed on your chest. Is it moving a lot with each inhalation? Is your chest rising more than your belly? Your belly should be doing most of the work as you inhale and your chest should only be expanding slightly. Try to focus on letting your diaphragm do 80% of the work as you breathe. With practice, you will gain greater control over your diaphragm and this way of breathing will become more effortless. In time, this will become an automatic natural migraine relief habit that you won't need to initiate because it will naturally take over for you.
Natural Migraine Relief Breathing Cues:
Throughout your day it can be helpful for you to create cues for yourself to take a few deep diaphragmatic breaths. For example, you could decide that every time your phone rings before you answer the phone you will take one deep diaphragmatic breath. When you are driving in your car you could use every red light you hit as a cue to take one deep diaphragmatic breath.
My favorite cue comes from my dog. Every time he lets out a big sigh, (which he does about 20 times throughout the day when I'm home with him) I follow his lead and I take one deep diaphragmatic breath. Choose cues for yourself that will signal you to breathe deeply into your belly often. I know a gal who uses Facebook as her primary cue for diaphragmatic breathing. Every time she receives a message from someone on Facebook she takes a slow, deep breath into her belly and fully exhales before opening her message.
The point is, make your natural migraine relief cues fun and memorable and make sure you act on these cues frequently. Remember that keeping your arteries dilated with diaphragmatic breathing is one of the most important steps you can take in becoming migraine free.

Treatment of Migraine and Related Headache By Jastin Bell

Most people who suffer from migraine get headache that may occur with symptoms such as nausea, symptoms such as nausea, difficulty in speaking, vomiting, or increased sensitivity. There is wide range of treatment available to cure migraine.
Migraine Treatment
Most people who suffer from migraine can deal with mild-to-moderate migraine attacks at home. The following measures may help in relieving migraine headaches to a certain extent. You must:
• Use a cold compress to the area of pain • Rest with pillows comfortably supporting the head and neck • Rest in a dark, quiet place • Avoid pungent odours • Withdraw from stressful surroundings • Sleep • Drink a moderate amount of caffeine
In addition, a variety of drugs have been specifically designed to migraine treatment. Medications used to combat migraines fall into two broad categories. They include:
• Pain-relieving medications: Also known as acute or abortive treatment, these drugs when taken during migraine attacks, can stop the symptoms that have already begun. • Preventive medications: These drugs are almost always meant to be taken regularly, on a daily basis, to help reduce the severity or frequency of migraine headaches.
Pain-relieving medications: These drugs must be taken as soon as the signs or symptoms of a migraine are experienced. Sleeping or resting in a dark room may also help. These drugs are:
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): These medications help relieve pain. NSAIDs must not be taken for a long period of time or else it may lead to ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding and rebound headaches. • Triptans: For severe migraine attacks, Triptans are the drug of choice. They effectively relieve migraine associated pain and nausea as well as sensitivity to light and sound. Side effects of triptans include nausea, dizziness, muscle weakness and, rarely, stroke and heart attack. • Ergots: Ergotamine, a common prescription for migraine, was in use long before triptans were introduced. • Anti-nausea medications: Since migraine attacks are often accompanied by nausea with or without vomiting, medication for nausea is appropriate and is usually combined with other medications. • Butalbital combinations: These medication combinations are sometimes used to treat migraine attacks. These medications, however, have a high risk of rebound headache and withdrawal symptoms and must therefore be used infrequently. • Opiates: Medications containing narcotics, particularly codeine, are sometimes used to treat migraine pain in people who cannot take triptans or ergots. These drugs are habit-forming and must be used only as a last resort.
Preventive medications: These medications often help in reducing the frequency, severity and length of migraines as well as increase the effectiveness of symptom-relieving medicines. Preventive medications are generally recommended for daily use, or when a predictable trigger like menstruation is approaching. Some preventive medications include:
• Cardiovascular drugs: Beta blockers - commonly used to treat high blood pressure and coronary artery disease - can reduce the frequency and severity of migraines. These drugs are generally considered as the first line of treatment. Calcium channel blockers - another class of cardiovascular drugs, may also be helpful. In addition, antihypertensive medications are useful in preventing migraines. • Antidepressants: Certain antidepressants can effectively prevent all types of headaches, including migraines. These medications reduce migraines by affecting the level of serotonin and other brain chemicals. • Anti-seizure drugs: Although the reason is unclear, some anti-seizure drugs, seem to prevent migraines. In high doses, however, these anti-seizure drugs can cause side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, hair loss and dizziness. • Cyproheptadine: This antihistamine specifically affects serotonin activity. Doctors sometimes give it to children as a preventive measure. • Botulinum toxin type A (Botox): People receiving Botox injections for facial wrinkles have noted improvement in their headaches. Although the mechanism itself is unclear, the drug may cause changes in the nervous system that modifies the body's tendency to develop migraines.

Take Charge of Your Health - Keep Track of Everything By Megan Oltman

One of the simplest and most powerful ways to take charge of your health is to keep track of everything related to your Migraines. A good headache specialist will want to see a Migraine diary, which should include dates and duration of your Migraines, severity of pain, other symptoms, triggers you are aware of, could also include amount, times and quality of sleep, foods eaten, medications used.
Your doctor cannot know if treatments are effective without this kind of information. Keeping a migraine diary is as important for you as it is for your doctor. Knowledge is power, remember? The knowledge you have about your own body, your own processes, gives you power.
By tracking Migraine triggers, you can notice new triggers and learn to avoid and eliminate some of them. Gaining some control over your Migraines is a process that will take time - if you have a 5% improvement per month, in a year you would have only 56% of the migraines you have now. Think what you could do with all those pain-free days! But how will you know if you've had a 5% improvement if you haven't kept track? We need something objective to measure against, rather than just our feelings. Your own Migraine brain is unique, and your triggers, combination of triggers, Migraine patterns, and what is effective to treat them, will not be exactly like anyone else's. You must be the master of that information.
There is another reason to keep track not only of your Migraines and the factors that affect them, but also of the effect they have on your life. If you ever find yourself in a position where you need to apply for disability, this information becomes very important. You will need to show that you have been unable to work, or unable to perform functions of daily life, for a certain period of time, and the more documentation you have of that, the better. If your doctor doesn't ask you about it, be sure you tell your doctor how many days of work you miss due to Migraines, and ask him or her to put that information in your medical records. If you are asking either an insurance company or a government benefits program to grant you disability and you don't have this kind of documentation, you will have a very hard time. You will be in the best position if you have medical records of your disability as well as your own records of your disability.
How should you do it? There are a number of migraine diaries available online. I use a form I've created that let's me see both the calendar and specifics for each day. Use anything that has enough flexibility to put in additional factors as you develop the need to track them. What's most important is to develop a habit of recording everything. Start with the basics - Keep track of Migraine:
dates
time of onset
severity (use a 1 - 10 pain scale or create one for yourself)
duration
aura if you have it
any other symptoms that come before the migraine
triggers you are aware of
your sleep patterns
hanges you make in medications
diet
nutritional supplements
supportive therapies such as acupuncture, massage, exercise, stretching, yoga or meditation.
Whatever you use, be sure to keep all your important papers together. A loose-leaf notebook works well; you can get folders to put inside it to keep medical records and prescription forms in, diary pages. You can keep questions you have for your doctor, or instructions if you need to go to the emergency room, and take the notebook with you to any appointments. This way everything is always in one place.
When you track your Migraines this way you can see trends and patterns, you can see what your unique brain responds to, and you can make the changes that can reduce your Migraines.

How to Avoid a Hangover After a Night of Partying By Trevor Johnson

While the only sure fire way not to get a hang over is to stay away from alcohol all together, if you're reading this article, chances are that isn't going to come into play. This in mind, there are things you can do to minimize your chances for getting one. Here are some tips on how to avoid a hang over that have proven to be successful.
The reason you get a hang over after a long night of binge or excessive drinking is that you have depleted your body of liquid. It may sound funny; you put a lot of liquid in, so how could you possible have depleted it, right? Although alcohol is technically a liquid, it dries you out. When you drink large quantities of alcohol, you dehydrate your blood and your brain.
One way to keep from getting a hang over is to drink a full 8 ounce glass of water for every alcoholic beverage that you drink. If you're pounding down over sized glasses of booze, you probably should drink more than 8 ounces. Try 10 or 12. This will keep your body hydrated and help minimize the effects of the alcohol to your system. You'll still get the experience that you're looking for but you're more likely to feel better about it tomorrow.
Make sure you eat something before you start drinking alcoholic beverages. Food will absorb the alcohol in your system and help you metabolize the chemicals quicker. You should also make sure to take plenty of Vitamin B and C, not just when you're going to party, but every day. Alcohol eats these nutrients from your body and makes you feel weak.
Another way to avoid a hang over the day after is to avoid mixing alcohol. Pick what works best for you and leave the rest alone. Don't mix different grain alcohols; especially not inexpensive ones, this will give you a major headache. The best way to avoid a hang over is to be sensible, don't binge drink. Eat, stay hydrated and get plenty of rest and you'll have a great time!

Headaches Can Impact Your Life - Some Seriously Some Not So Seriously By Mark Bevan

  • Headache treatment
Most headaches are caused by muscle spasms in the back of the head and neck. The spasm can be sparked by emotional stress or by holding the head in a fixed position for long hours. At times the pain can be extremely severe and feels as if the head is in a vise-like band.
Relaxing tight muscles through massage, hot showers and heating pads or cold packs, including biofeedback and muscle-relaxation training may prove to be helpful.
While some people find relief with non-traditional techniques, like acupuncture, hypnosis or meditation, non-prescription pain relievers often help with occasional headache. In very severe cases, prescription analgesics like aspirin and acetaminophen may also do the trick.
However, prescription analgesics are not always useful because they tend to lose their effectiveness, encourage dependency, and cause "rebound" headaches when the effect of the starts to wear off. On the other hand, tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline or Imipramine could prove to be a less addictive and often more effective alternative; these medications affect the pain pathways in the brain. Nonetheless, these drugs must be used for several weeks before they can take effect. Since much lower doses are needed for pain, there are generally few or no side effects.
Drugs that help constrict blood vessels may also relieve pain if taken at the first sign of the headache.
What are the different types of headaches?
There are several types of headaches; almost 150 diagnostic headache categories have been established! However, the most frequently reported ones include:
Tension headache: Also called chronic daily headaches or chronic non-progressive headaches. These headaches are the most common and generally affect both adults and adolescents. These headaches come on when the muscles contract that cause mild to moderate pain and come and go over a prolonged period of time.
Migraines: There exact cause is unknown, although it is understood that they are related to blood vessel contractions and other changes in the brain as well as inherited abnormalities in certain areas of the brain. Pain can often be anything from moderate to severe, and is often described as pounding, throbbing pain. The pain last for about 4 hours to 3 days and generally occurs 1 to 4 times per month. Moreover, migraines are associated with sensitivity to light, noise or odours; nausea or vomiting; loss of appetite; and stomach upset or abdominal pain.
When children have a migraine they often look pale, feel dizzy, have blurred vision, fever, stomach upset, in addition to the above listed symptoms. A small number of pediatric migraine patients have recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms, in which vomiting is the most common symptom. These migraines are also referred to as abdominal migraines.
Mixed headache: Also known as transformed migraines, this is a combination of migraine and tension headaches. Both adults and children experience this type of headache.
Cluster headaches: The term "cluster headache" refers to a characteristic grouping of attacks. The least common as well as the most severe, the pain during a cluster headache is intense and can also be described as having a burning or piercing quality that is either throbbing or constant. Excruciating pain makes it difficult for most sufferers to sit still and can often be found pacing during an attack. The pain is generally located behind one eye or in the eye region, and does not change sides.
These headaches normally occur one to three times per day, lasting anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months. The headaches may go into remission for months or years, only to recur one fine day.

Advice For Migraine Sufferers By Steve A Johnson

A migraine is more than a headache. It is more intense, your head throbs with pain, and can even cause nausea. You become sensitive to sounds and lights. A migraine is caused by swollen blood vessels and nerves in and next to the brain.
The pains begin to occur when the excited brain cells set off the trigeminal nerve that releases chemicals that irritate and cause swelling of your blood vessels on the brains surface. This causes the vessels to send signals to your brain stem to cause great pain.
There is a major difference between a headache and a migraine. A headache is the muscles, scalp, and neck tightening and causing pains, where as a migraine is a change in the chemicals in you body. The vessels in the brain begin to expand and your serotonin levels lower, causing nerves to misfire and severe pain to set in.
Over 29 million people suffer from migraines. More women have migraines than men. For every 1 man 3 women obtain a migraine. It is most common for people from ages 25 through 55 to have these pounding attacks, but even a 5 year old child can have an attack.
Women can obtain what is called "menstrual migraines" in which occur around the time of the menstrual cycle. Pregnant women also are more likely to receive painful disturbances in the brain. After menopause is when some females have their first migraine attack.
Research shows that about 75% of people who suffer from migraines have a family history of them. Half of the people who suffer from this head pain aren't diagnosed correctly by their physician. Most doctors say it is a sinus problem or a tension headache.
An attack can be triggered by many things. If you alter your biological clock, start taking different medications, or even skip a meal you may be setting yourself up for a migraine. Also bright or florescent lights, watching too much TV, excessive noise and stress can trigger an attack as well.
Prior to the migraine you may experience some warning signs. You may see dots, lines or flashing lights. It may even become as severe as not being able to speak or having tingling body parts.
Pain is typical felt not only on the brain but around your eyes and well as temples. Your face, jaws and sinuses can also be affected if the migraine is severe enough. It may be as bad as not even being able to touch your own head!
An attack may last up to 72 hours. Climbing stairs can intensify the symptoms of the headache, as well as may be dangerous due to visual disturbances and aura. It is often important to take a rest in a dark quiet room to cure some symptoms.
Getting rid of a migraine may even call for medical attention. Before seeking medical attention try some home remedies. Try getting good amount of sleep at night, or changing your sleep habits. Putting an ice pack on your head or a cold towel to relieve the swollen blood vessels can relieve pain.
Trying all natural supplements is a great way to help as well. Did you know that every time you take an aspirin your stomach bleeds a teaspoon of blood? Kleer Head is formulated to alleviate migraines, thins the blood to sooth tension.

8 Steps to Help You Put an End to Late Night Snacking By Lauren S Johnson

One of the biggest problems that many dieters have is late night snacking. There is just something about the evening hours which brings forth various snack food cravings. In this article I will reveal 8 steps which will help you put an end to those unwanted urges once and for all.
Be sure to consume all of the major meals of the day. When you skip breakfast, lunch or dinner you are much more likely to snack throughout the day.
Be sure that you consume all of your meals sitting at the dinner table (rather than in front of the TV or the computer).
When you feel a craving coming on, try unsweetened raspberry tea. It's delicious and it will keep your mouth busy.
Make sure that your night time schedule does not encourage snacking. You should never dine out late at night and have a TV-snacking ritual.
If stress is the main reason behind your evening munchies, try to find another way to cope with your troubles. Call a friend or read a relaxing book. Do something which does not bring about the idea of food.
Brush your teeth right after dinner in order to remind yourself that your last meal of the day is finished.
Do things which require two hands, this way you don't have the comfort to snack (such as when watching television).
if you absolutely have to eat late at night, remember to be smart about the foods you consume. Try a delicious fruit or some veggies. Our digestive system slows down at night so remember that majority of the calories you consume will be stored.

Lose Weight by Making a Few Changes in Your Pantry By Lauren S Johnson

The foods which we consume on a daily basis are a reflection of what we have available to us at home; therefore, if you eat a rather unhealthy diet than you have nobody to blame but yourself. That is why it is extremely important to stock your kitchen with only the healthiest of foods. In this article I will reveal several dietary changes which you can make in order to reduce your daily calorie intake.
If you use corn or peanut oil, replace it with olive oil.
Make sure that all of your breads and pastas are either whole grain or whole wheat. Refined grains don't offer any healthy benefits.
When buying meats, be sure to say goodbye to salami and bologna and say hello to sliced turkey breast, and lean roast beef.
When searching for protein, make sure that you buy plenty of fish, and beans. You also purchase skinless chicken breast.
Be sure to stay away from whole milk dairy. Whether you are buying yogurt or sour cream make sure that it is far free. It may be difficult for some people to go from whole milk to 1% milk, which is why it is important to make the transition slow. Start out with 2 % and make your way to 1%.
Make sure that your pantry is well stocked with fresh fruit and vegetables. Fresh produce offer plenty of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Furthermore, they are excellent at calming your sweet tooth and helping you feel full longer.

How to Lose Ankle Fat By Daniel Murray

Anyone who looks at their feet and ankles and wonders if there is a way to reduce this excess fat. The truth of the matter is that in order to lose ankle fat you will have to lose weight over your entire body in order to get to your ankles. Just as with anything else you have to work on your entire body in order to achieve a weight loss in any specific area from your abs to your ankles. Understanding how to utilize diet, exercise and portion control are the keys to losing that stubborn ankle fat.
If you are already eating a healthy diet than you will want to consider eating smaller portions on a more frequent basis to stimulate your digestive system as well as your metabolism to help you break down your calories and foods at a faster rate. For those of you out there who are currently not eating a healthy diet it is time to get rid of those processed foods and replace them with fresh fruits, vegetables and foods that contain proteins and carbs. Although you have heard that carbohydrates are bad, they are necessary to help your metabolism break down calories.
Once you have established your diet that can help you start losing weight almost instantly, combine this new lifestyle with consistent exercise. You do not only want to work on cardio or strength training, combining the two is the only way to be sure to reduce your body fat and lose ankle fat along the way as well. There are several ankle strengthening exercises you can perform at home or at the gym that can help speed up the weight loss process in that area that include weight lifting. Placing an ankle weight on your leg and doing reps of 12 and sets of 1-2 of leg raises can help strengthen the muscles around the area and eliminate the fat that is not producing muscle and definition.
Lastly, your body naturally stores fat in areas that require more warmth and for many women this is their feet. So in order to prevent your excess body fat from heading straight towards the hardest area of the body to lose, keep your feet always warm in your socks and leg warmers. Learning how to lose ankle feet is something that many women especially take the time to understand fully especially after a pregnancy and an overall weight loss is the key to success.

Lose Belly Fat Without Doing Sit Ups By Cindie Thomas

Sit Ups Won't Burn Off Your Belly Fat
Doing sit ups may help you add some muscle to your midsection and they may also help you to improve your stamina but they will have very little effect on the amount of fat you have covering your belly.
Neither Will Any Other Abdominal Exercises
Similarly any other ab exercises you may have heard about will have little effect on the amount of stomach fat you have. And this goes for all of those ab exerciser machines you've seen advertised on television too!
Why Not?
Ab exercises have little effect on the fat covering your midsection because it's not possible to pinpoint fat with exercise. If you are someone that holds their excess fat in their stomach region then the reason for that is your genetics, not that you don't do enough ab exercises.
So What Can You Do?
The real keys to losing belly fat are starting a metabolism boosting diet and starting a weight lifting regimen. Doing these two things will help your body to burn more calories which will help you to lower your body fat percentage until that excess stomach fat has no choice but to melt off your body.
Metabolism Boosting Diet
Instead of starting a low calorie or low fat diet you should start a diet which boosts your metabolism so that you continue burning fat. The great thing is that the best way to do this is by starting a diet which includes a regular "day off" from dieting because that "day off" makes your body think it's getting too many calories which keeps your "fat burning gene" turned on. And it should be quite obvious to you why having a "day off" from dieting would be a good thing! It makes it much easier to stick with your diet.
Weight Lifting Regimen?
It's important to include muscle building as a part of your long term fitness plan because each pound of muscle you add to your body burns an extra 50 calories a day even if you are totally at rest. You can see that if you add 10 pounds of muscle to your body that you will burn an additional 500 calories a day! This makes it much easier to burn off fat and (just as importantly) to keep that fat off for good.

Basics of a No Flour, No Sugar Diet - Eliminate Empty Calories By Harold McDaniels

In a perfect world, peanut butter and jelly sandwich is low on calories, ice cream is low fat and chocolate cookie is the dieters' best buddy. Well, we don't live in a perfect world--far from it. So, in this overly flawed world, in order to live a healthy and long life, we have to keep these foods away from our pantries and fridge. In fact, we have to forget that they even exist.
With the diet developed by Dr. Gott called No Flour, No Sugar Diet, our darkest, most sinful food fantasies are totally gone. Forget it; they don't even exist.
The No Flour, No Sugar Diet can be judged by the name itself. It advocates the removal of flour-based foods and foods that have added sugar from its list of ingredients. The bad news is, sugar and carbohydrates come in many forms, so the diet drastically trims food choices into only the healthiest ones. Sugar, for example, may be found in unsuspicious names like corn syrup, lactose, maltose and others. Refined flour, well, it comes in varieties too so consumers beware.
The very unfortunate thing is that both sugar and flour are processed in the body as carbohydrates, and later as fats. These are also considered as foods with empty calories (or junk calories) as they lack in nutritive value.
The solution this diet offers is right on the money--eliminate the bad stuff from the menu. By doing so, you will be able to save on calories and health conditions that junk calories often result to. Just imagine how much calorie you'll save by just sticking with fruits, vegetables, lean meats and healthy foods.
Though this diet promotes amnesia towards our favorite flour-based and sugar-filled foods, this simply cuts in as one of the most sensible diets there is.
Now you want to have more energy, be Healthier, look Younger, lose weight, and cleanse your body, right

The 5 and 1 Diet Plan - Successful Weight Loss? By Harold McDaniels

The Medifast 5 and 1 Diet plan's banner says it all - helping you lose weight and helping you keep it off.
The Basics
The 5 and 1 diet is among the most popular weight-loss product by Medifast. This recommends 5 meal replacements and 1 real meal per day, a "lean and green" meal that is composed of lean protein, salads and two cups of vegetables to break the monotony of meal replacements.
The meal replacements are formulated to have very low calories, thus it is possible to achieve weight loss of 2 to 5 pounds per week by undergoing this plan. These meal replacements come in various forms including soups, bars, oatmeal preparations and shakes that come with varying protein proportions. Every day, participants of this plan consume approximately 800 to 1000 calories, a calorie intake that is barely enough to make your body pack extra fats.
The rule is to eat these replacements every 2 to 3 hours. According to the principles of maintaining metabolism, this is a sound plan as it allows the body with just enough to process to keep its metabolism at peak. This diet also advocates drinking of at least 64oz of water per day. On top of this, other fluids may be consumed as well.
Why it's effective in triggering weight loss?
Do the math. With a daily caloric intake of up to 1000 calories and meal replacements that are engineered to keep you off from weight-loss-busting goodies, this diet plan definitely takes you to a weight-gain proofed zone. Forget about the lean and green meal, which could attempt you to consume more foods than you are actually allowed.
It is noteworthy that this weight loss plan was created for overweight people. Though the methods it advocates are drastic (take note of ketosis and dehydration), it surely has helped many people with their weight problems.
Now you want to have more energy, be Healthier, look Younger, lose weight, and cleanse your body, right?

Food Allergies and Weight Loss - Taking These Kind of Foods Will Just Cause You to Gain More Weight By Harold McDaniels

Not everyone has the pleasure to enjoy every food conceived by one's mind. A small number of people across the world suffer either from food allergies or food intolerance. However, some may conclude that their unpleasant reaction to something they ate is a form of food allergies. According to surveys, only 1% of adults and 3% of children are clinically proven to have true allergic reactions to food. The discrepancy between clinically proven food allergies and perception is primarily due to people's misinterpretation of food intolerance.
Food allergies are abnormal responses to food that are triggered by a particular reaction in the immune system and expressed by some characteristics and symptoms like:
1. Itching in the mouth and difficulty swallowing and breathing 2. Nausea 3. Vomiting 4. Diarrhea 5. Abdominal pain
In adults, the following foods are the most common causes of allergies:
1. Shrimp 2. Crayfish 3. Lobster 4. Crabs 5. Nuts from trees like walnuts 6. Fish 7. Eggs 8. Peanuts
In most adults, even small amount of a food allergen can stimulate allergic reaction. Less sensitive people, on the other hand are able to tolerate small amounts of a food to which they have allergies. Recently, people try to link food allergies to difficulty in weight loss. One premise that supports such theory is that once the allergy is established, there is the tendency to crave for such food as it becomes moderately addictive and feels the compulsion to eat it.
When people are allergic to a food, their body reacts by storing it instead of utilizing it for energy. If they eat a good quantity of foods to which they are allergic, they are inclined to gain more weight. There are two classifications of allergic reactions.
1. Delayed Allergy or intolerance. This is also labeled as Type B and its reaction takes place between one hour and three days after eating the food. Symptoms include:
a. Weight gain b. Bloating c. Water retention d. Fatigue e. Aching Joints f. Headaches
2. Classic Allergy. Also known as type A, it gives a reaction right after a contact with a food allergen is established.
Just this April 2009, the Middle East Journal of Family Medicine published an article about the research study initiated by Medical Researchers in Dubai. The article was entitled The Effect of The ALCAT Test Diet Therapy for Food Sensitivity in Patient's With Obesity and it states that patients who are unable to attain weight loss, goals by calorie restriction alone were dramatically helped in their attempts when they shunned the foods that are giving them allergic reactions.
The authors of the study, which was headed by Dr. M. Akmal of the Dubai Specialized Medical Centre, emphasized that hidden food allergies or food sensitivities are unique to a person and can cause inflammatory illnesses and inability to lose weight. Sometime during the 12-week long of the study, the 27 refractory patients were given a single treatment: avoidance of foods that are shown to be immune, reactive according to their blood testing through a system labeled as the ALCAT test.
The participants manifested weight loss of 37 pounds and an average reduction of six points of BMI plus an average decrement of 30% body fat.
